Victor Grunhut was born in Germany, the son of Hungarian chemical broker, Jacques Grunhut and his German-born wife, Charlotte.

The family came to England around the early 1870s, and Jacques took an active part in local politics.

Victor started at the High School in May, 1885, and left in 1887 to be an articled solicitor. After studying, he was admitted to the Solicitor's Roll in February, 1893.

In 1905, the failing South Shields Rugby Club's ground had been taken over by the South Shields Adelaid Association Football Club. But the new club was short of funds, and Victor stepped in with a short-term loan of £35.

He practisedas a solicitor in South Shields, and went into partnership with Blackett Gill, although this partnership was dissolved in 1918.

He was mobilised in August, 1914, as a Captain with the Royal Field Artillery (Northumbrian Howitzer Brigade). By September, 1916, he was a Major, commanding the 2nd and 3rd line 4th Northumberland Howitzer Brigade.

After the war, he continued as a solicitor, and died in Tynemouth at the age of 92.
