There is no direct evidence that the details here refer to the same Andrew Rankine who went to Westoe Secondary School, but the relatively unusual name suggests that it is likely.

Andrew Roberston Rankine was the son of Marine Engineer, David Kennedy Rankine and his wife, Margaret. Both parents were Scots - his father born in Glasgow and his mother in Buckhaven, Fife.

David Rankine and Margaret Robertson were married and lived in Tynemouth, and Andrew initially attended Tynemouth Priory Secondary School.

He moved to Westoe School in June, 1908, at the age of 14, although he continued to live in Tynemouth.

Andrew is recorded in the 1901 census as "Robertson Rankine" living with his mother's brother and wife. His mother and sister had joined his father, who was Chief Engineer on board the SS Asiatic Prince in London.

Although his surname was Rankine, it is recorded on the Roll of Honour, and in the military records, as Rankin.

He attended Westoe School for only about 6 months, leaving to be an apprentice ironmonger.

He is believed to have served with the 13th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers and to have been killed in the Battle of Hill 70, near Loos, about 15 miles south-west of Lille in France.

He is remembered at the Loos Memorial at the Dud Corner Cemetery in Loos-en-Gohelle.
